It is a World map when the time zones are shown. The map specifies each region of the Earth that has adopted the
same standard time, usually referred to as the local time. Most adjacent time zones are exactly one hour apart, and by
convention compute their local time as an offset from Greenwich Mean Time (GMT).
Before the adoption of time zones, people used local solar time (originally apparent solar time, as with a sundial; and,
later, mean solar time). Mean solar time is the average over a year of apparent solar time. Its difference from apparent

Time zones were first proposed for the entire world by Canada's Sir Sandford Fleming in 1876. In 1879 he specified that
his universal day would begin at the anti-meridian of Greenwich (now called 180°). He continued to advocate his system at subsequent international conferences.
Finally, the International Meridian Conference adopted a universal day of 24 hours beginning at Greenwich midnight, but
specified that it "shall not interfere with the use of local or standard time where desirable".
