Antique Clock

Humankind has always recognized the passing of time and has tried to measure and record that passing. Because of that, clocks are present among us since a long long time, and from those early days you could find some unique timepieces classified as "antique".

Common Antique Clock types:

Different books and clock experts may call the same type of clock by different names according to geographical differences and trade custom, sometimes causing confusion. Next is a general classification of Antique Clock:

  • Advertising clocks: Collective term for clocks used for promotional purposes that display advertisings somewhere on the clock dial or case. Most commonly found as wall clocks or shelf clocks; more rarely as longcase or grandfather clocks. Price Range: US$
  • Animated clocks: Clocks with moving parts that display the actions of a person, animal or object.
  • Ballon clocks: A shelf clock whose case is shaped in a form similar to the hot-air balloons of the late 18th century.
  • Black mantel clock: General name for a shelf clock with a predominantly black case made of marble, slate, onyx, or painted iron. Often a wooden case was painted in imitation of black marble or onyx.
  • Blinker or moving eye clocks: A clock with a case in the shape of a human figure or animal whose eyes blink, rotate or move in unison with the clock escapement.
  • Calendar clock: A clock that shows the date. May show day, month and year or any combination thereof.
